History of ReggaeEDM
ReggaeEDM is a genre-defying fusion of culture, rhythm, and innovation, where the deep, bass-driven grooves of reggae meet the pulse and energy of electronic dance music.
Born from the experimental spirit of Jamaican sound system culture, ReggaeEDM took form as artists began blending dub’s analog warmth with the digital dynamism of EDM. The genre was named and pioneered by Miami-based artist Kēvens, who coined the term in 1998 at the Zen Music Festival to describe his distinctive sound: a spiritually charged mix of jungle, drum and bass, and reggae. Since then, ReggaeEDM has gained global momentum, breaking cultural barriers with chart-topping releases like Kēvens' “Legal Dreamers” and drawing contributions from groundbreaking acts such as Major Lazer, Thievery Corporation, Adrian Sherwood, Asian Dub Foundation, and Skrillex. ReggaeEDM captures the power of music to unite diverse audiences, delivering both the meditative soul of reggae and the electrifying energy of the dance floor.
