DJ Rap and General Levy Release New Single "Junglist Nation"

DJ Rap and General Levy released "Junglist Nation" on July 31. It came out on DJ Rap's own label, Propa Talent: one track, four minutes and five seconds, General Levy's vocal riding DJ Rap's production. It's live now on Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud, and Apple Music has picked it up for its own Dance "Drum 'n' Bass" playlist.

This is the same pairing that helped make jungle a chart genre in the first place. General Levy came up on the dancehall mic before jungle existed as a genre, and he carried that style straight into it. His vocal on M-Beat's 1994 single "Incredible" took dancehall-style toasting into the UK top 10, the first jungle record to climb that high, and it went gold. DJ Rap came up in that same scene as one of the only women producing and DJing jungle and drum and bass at the time. She self-released her own material before Sony signed her, alongside Grooverider and Leftfield, and later started her own label, Propa Talent, to put out music on her own terms. "Junglist Nation" is that same combination three decades later: a dancehall-rooted MC over jungle production, on a label she owns and runs herself. The title is scene shorthand. A "junglist" is what the genre's own fans and producers have called themselves since the early days, and the song is a direct nod to that identity.

DJ Rap's catalog includes the 1999 album Learning Curve, which Rolling Stone praised at the time. She runs two labels, Propa Talent and Impropa Talent, and continues to record and perform. General Levy posted about "Junglist Nation" on his own Facebook page ahead of the July 31 release. Neither artist has announced a video or tour dates tied to the single so far, and there is no word yet on whether more new material is coming from either of them this year.
